Screen Editor alex ponders self-help books, Mansome and what it means to be a man:

As a transguy, the question “What makes me a man?” has meant both pretty much the same things to me as to any other guy, and also something a bit different. I had to figure most of it out on my own, going through a second puberty of sorts at a point when all my peers were full grown, and in the process I’ve read about and watched a lot of versions of masculinity. From Charles Atlas and men’s exercise magazines to feminist and gender theory, there are so many options and perceived limits around how to be a man. Men’s self-improvement books like The 4-Hour Body and movies like Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Mansome are just a few examples.

At the Gutter: The Trouble with Endings, Part 2: The Re-Conclusioning

SF/F Editor James talks about endings in his last piece for The Cultural Gutter.

The trouble with endings, of course, is that they are really difficult to do well. I’ll try to take that warning to heart myself, since this piece will be my last for The Cultural Gutter. And what better way to wrap up a really fun time on a neat project than to look at endings!

James was one of the original crew of editors at The Cultural Gutter. He’s been writing for us since 2004. We’ll miss him and are so appreciative of everything he’s done for The Gutter. Thank you,  James—you’ll always be part of The Cultural Gutter!

At the Gutter: The Kids are Alright

This week Romance Editor Chris Szego takes a look at young adult romance and offers a selection of good reads.

Despite my whinging last month, I do in fact both read and love a lot of young adult Romance.  I  may not be fond of the ‘Supernatural Boyfriend of the Week’ subgenre (and no, Stephanie Meyer did not invent it; it’s been out there for decades), but that still leaves me with a large field full of great books.  This is a great time for YA books in general, so it makes sense that there’ll be some top notch Romances among them.
